Pipes
A pipe for tobacco smoking typically consists of a small chamber (the bowl) for the combustion of the tobacco to be smoked and a thin stem (shank) that ends in a mouthpiece (the bit). Pipes can range from the very simple machine-made briar pipe to highly-prized handmade and artful implements created by renowned pipemakers which are often very expensive collector's items.
The bowls of tobacco pipes are commonly made of briar, corncob, meerschaum, and clay. Less common are cherrywood, olivewood, maple, mesquite, and oak. Generally a dense-grained wood is ideal. Minerals such as catlinite and soapstone have also been used. Pipe bowls are frequently carved with a great deal of artistry.
Unusual, but still noteworthy pipe bowl materials include gourds, as in the famous calabash pipe, and pyrolytic graphite. Metal and glass are uncommon materials for tobacco pipes, but are common for pipes intended for other substances.
The stem needs a long channel of constant position and diameter running through it, and this is difficult to carve out of a pre-existing block. Because it is molded rather than carved, clay may make up the entire pipe or just the bowl, but most other materials have stems made separately and detachable. Stems and bits of tobacco pipes are usually made of moldable materials like vulcanite, lucite, Bakelite, and soft plastic. Less common are stems made of reeds, bamboo, or hollowed out pieces of wood. Expensive pipes once had stems made of amber, though this is rare now.
Tobaccos for smoking in pipes are often carefully treated and blended to achieve flavour nuances not available in other tobacco products. Many of these are blends using staple ingredients of variously cured Burley and Virginia tobaccos which are enhanced by spice tobaccos, among them many Oriental or Balkan varietals, Latakia (a fire-cured spice tobacco of Cypriot or Syrian origin), Perique (uniquely grown in St. James Parish, Louisiana) or blends of Virginia and Burley tobaccos of African, Indian, or South American origins. Traditionally, many U.S. blends are made of American Burley with sweeteners and flavorings added to create an "aromatic" flavor, whereas "English" blends are based on natural Virginia tobaccos enhanced with Oriental and other natural tobaccos. There is a growing tendency towards "natural" tobaccos which derive their aromas from artful blending with selected spice tobaccos only and careful, often historically-based, curing processes.

100 Brass Gold Tobacco Pipe ScreensReviewsI smoke a pipe several times a day, always with these. I ordered them here because there's no local shops around here where I can get this quantity for the price. Come to think of it there's not really any shops at all local to this area, so sometimes I buy mundane things on Amazon. I haven't used a quarter of the bag since October 2008 (there was definitely more than 100 in there) and have never burned completely through one or had them fall apart. so yeah, there you go. They are indeed brass pipe screens. Follow the smoke toward the riff-filled land... These are a waste of money, they are supposed to be 3/4 inch and they are all different sizes, if i wanted that i would ordered that. The copper is so thin it will not stay in the pipe when tamped put, poor quality Not much to talk about on a bunch of knitted thin wires cut into a circle, but the disks work well, as expected. These screens are the easiest to tear and rip of any i have ever worked with. The brass is too soft, do yourself a favor and get steel screens! We received more than 100, only one was snagged, and they work like a charm. Average Rating:![]() |

Classical Cigar Pipe (with Leather Case)ReviewsIt's pretty good for a first pipe however the design on the bowl (although you can tell is faux mahogany in the picture) looks even worse in person. And although it says "...With leather Case" I only received the pipe in a box *EDIT* A Simple email to Trade Links and the case arrived presently Good smoking pipe. I only knocked the review down a star because I'm deployed overseas and the pipe didn't arrive for about a month, even though I ordered it the same time I ordered tobacco from a small vendor online (The tobacco arrived in less than five days). I reviewed all my info and apparently the company entered my APO/FPO info wrong so it bounced around overseas all that time. Other than that, no complaints.... I am a long time pipe smoker. In my personal opinion, this is the cheapest pipe I have ever seen or used. I am trying to find a cheap intro pipe to sell in my store, but this isn't it. DON'T WAST YOUR MONEY, this is not worth it. The pipe is nice to look at, but it is very cheaply made and the handle is shaky. I bought it as a gift for someone, but because of its condition I am embarrassed to give it as a gift coming from me I bought this to be my first ever pipe. Even though I'm still breaking the pipe in, it works extremely well. It is easy to clean, and the pouch even contains extra O-rings to keep a good seal and prevent the smoke from leaking out and from air getting in. This was very well made and will be a highlight to my new past-time and what will eventually become a collection of pipes. Average Rating:![]() |

In Search of Pipe DreamsReviewsThis book is an excellent personal perspective on a variety of pipe makers and pipe topics and worth the read for the collector. There are more informative books for those new to the pipe. The biographies provide the most infotainment. Newcombes write in an easy style and the book reads like a pipe travels diary rather than a reference source (which it isn't). The one really annoying factor in the book is how often the author mentions his belief that pipes should be opened up more. He tends to drone on and on about the subject far to often, to the point of distraction from the rest of the material. While I found this book interesting overall it is probably not the best book for the novice or casual pipe smoker. Too much dedication is made to the high end pipes that few will buy or can afford. There is little mention of the pleasure of smoking a simple though adequate pipe. I'm sure I'm in the majority; those of us who enjoy smoking a pipe, but could never imagine spending $1000 on one (or more than a few hundred for me). This book mainly discusses those extremely expensive pieces, but in the authors defense, he claims to smoke them, so whatever floats his boat. There is also really good political commentary, discussion on pipe mechanics, and the book is nicely written and easy to read. If you want something nice to read about how the rich people enjoy their pipe tobacco, this is your book. If you resent the uber wealthy contingent of pipe smokers, this book might cause fits of rage for you. I'm a tolerant guy, I enjoyed it. In Search of Pipe Dreams Great Book! Very interesting reading-all I ever wanted to know about pipes-"How To's & Why. This is for me definitely one of the best books on pipes ever written. Very informative, yet written in an easy and catching style that really keeps you reading and reading and reading... without stopping. Lots of useful and very interesting information. If only Mr.Newcombe would write a sequel... Highly recomended for all pipe and tobacco lovers and other interested audience... One of my definite favourites among pipe books! Average Rating:![]() |

Stories of pipe-smoking's greatest craftspeople intertwine with advice and commentary in these essays on the art of pipe smoking. While exploring pipe craftsmanship worldwide, these writings combine tales of the author's visits to Europe's most prestigious pipe-makers with a look at pipe-smoking's history and the hobby's most famous practitioners, including Albert Einstein, Norman Rockwell, and Mark Twain... |

Pipesmoking: A 21st Century GuideReviewsI love Mr. Hacker's style. This is an easy and enjoyable read. It is great for the beginner or for the experienced smoker. All of the basics are covered here as well as an informative section on different types of tobaccos. Great stuff!!!! Richard Carleton Hacker has taken a direct line to writing everything a person needs in taking up pipe smoking. From the history of pipes, to selecting your first purchase and how to enjoy your pipe for years to come. I have also ordered his "Ultimate Pipe Smoking Video" and am awaiting its arrival. You cannot go wrong in purchasing this book. Richard Carleton Hacker is, in my words, a true and honest teacher and "fellow traveler" in his explanations of all facets of pipes and pipe smoking. He humorously and humbly tells of his learning experiences that led to his vast knowledge of this subject. Mr. Hacker reveals a history, a future, and above all, a presence of pipe smoking that is not only thought provoking, but educational for all. If anything is lacking at all in this book, I would say it is the absence of reviewing any G.L. Pease blends in the tobacco section. However, this is a relatively new tobbaco blending line. Hacker would only be stepping too far, perhaps, on relaying information that he may have not tested fully to give an honest opinion. His tobacco reviews are no more subjective than the rest of ours may be. I favor the "English style"tobaccos, myself. Hacker is probably much less subjective than I would be in writing similar reviews. We all have our choices on what is "better" or "not as". Our author encourages the reader to elaborate on his views. We all have different views on what shape, grade, or brand of pipe we choose. We are given a resource guide that allows us help in choosing what we may be looking for in a pipe or smoking accouterment. And, I sure gained a better insite into improving my skills as a pipe smoker. I believe that Richard Carleton Hacker's "Pipesmoking - A 21st Century Guide" is by far the best that is out there. It's a GEM. I can only look forward to a later addition that may elaborate on his future reviews of the latest trends in pipe smoking. Gives a personal reveiw of major brands of tobacco that is something to use for reference. It is very similar to his other books with some added information. It would be a good starter for someone who wants to start smoking. Typical Hacker book here. Lots of useful info as long as you can sift through his very high opinion of himself. Makes good reading, but don't hesitate skipping the parts where he talks about how important he is to the industry... Average Rating:![]() |
